Solid surface countertops are strong and durable. They can hold heavy objects and withstand high impact. The surface has a coating that makes it appear like or imitate other materials like natural stone. It is the coating, and not the solid surface countertop, that can easily be damaged with constant scratching and cutting.
Scratching on solid surface countertops
Solid surface countertops do not chip or get cut deeply, unless they are deliberately sawed off or drilled into. To prevent your solid surface countertop from being susceptible to scratches, choose one with rounder or curvier edges rather than with sharp ones. Rounder edges scrape less because they are already blunted, but sharp edges are more prone to getting cuts so avoid having them on your countertop. But if you insist on having sharp edges, you can get those that sharpen at the bottom and not at the top. Sharp edges can get uneven in the long run.
High impact pressure on solid surface countertops
Solid surface countertops do not collapse easily, and they can support heavy objects. They are made of durable materials such as polymers and acrylic. Solid surface countertops can tolerate high impact pressure, but only up to a certain extent. They can get dented if a really heavy object falls on the surface at a high speed. The chances of solid surface countertops collapsing are small, however. They can collapse if there is a natural calamity like an earthquake or if unusual circumstances like a heavy refrigerator falling over it happen.
Compared to laminate countertops, solid surface countertops are far more impact resistant. A can of food falling off the cabinet and onto the surface can easily dent laminate countertops. With solid surface countertops, it takes a lot more than falling cans to damage the surface. Deliberate cutting of or hitting on the surface can do damage on your solid surface countertops, however.
Repairing scratched solid surface countertops
Solid surface countertops are made to be scratch-resistant, but they are not impervious to cuts. Sharp and pointed objects such as knives and scissors can damage the surface. However, damage to the surface of your solid surface countertop can easily be remedied especially if it is just a simple scratch or a shallow cut. The remedies that you can do are easy and can be done at home. To remove the scratches caused by knives or other sharp objects, simply take a buffer and use it to smoothen the scratches out. To make the surface shine like new again, rub a polishing agent or even regular toothpaste on your solid surface countertop. Using a polishing brush is even better because it makes the polish even. This process is similar to polishing brass objects and furniture.
